Australia made a bright opening to the three-Test series against West Indies,but failed to drive home the advantage,reaching 322 for five at the Gabba on Thursday.
All the batsmen,except opener Shane Watson,got starts but none converted them into three-figure knocks as Simon Katich (92),skipper Ricky Ponting (55),Michael Hussey (66) and Michael Clarke (41) fell when well set.
Marcus North (42) and Brad Haddin (9) were at the crease when stumps were drawn.
The hosts lost Watson in the third over of the day but Katich and Ponting settled down to raise a stand of 126. Katich hit 13 fours and a six in his 92 before falling in the post-lunch session.
Hussey was uncomfortable to begin with,but soon he settled down. He fell to a soft dismissal,caught and bowled by Suleiman Benn when well set.

Akmals shine on gloomy day for Pak
Dunedin: Returning to Test cricket after two years,Shane Bond rattled Pakistan with his pace on a windy day and pegged the visitors down to eight for 307 on day three of the first Test.
Pakistan,who slumped to five for 85,could have been in real trouble but for the debutant Umar Akmal. The 19-year-old launched a counterattack and impressed with his dazzling display of 129 off 160 delivers which helped his team avoid the follow-on.
Bond sent down a fiery spell of seven overs in which he had Pakistan reeling at 3 for 25 after New Zealand had folded making 429 in the morning. Umar found support from elder brother Kamran Akmal and the two put up a 176-run stand for the sixth wicket. Kamran fell 18 runs short of a well-deserved century.
