Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav attacked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for preventing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from addressing university students in Kanpur, saying ‘autocracy has replaced democracy’ in the state.

"There is no democracy left in the state and the Chief Minister has nothing to do with it," Yadav said.

Yadav said the state government should not forget that ‘autocracy’ does not last long and its end ‘is very near’.

The Congress leader was on Friday prevented from addressing students of Chandrashekhar Azad University when the varsity administration cancelled the interaction at the last minute.

However, Rahul kept up his date with the students and interacted with them at the college cafeteria.

On the party's alliance with Congress for the forthcoming polls, he said the seat-sharing arrangement will soon be over and that the SP was ready to allot certain seats to Congress where the party is strong.

Asked about the seats vacated by Raj Babbar and Beni Prasad Verma, Singh said, "they are still SP members and Congress should not talk of their leaving seats."

On Batla House encounter, Yadav reiterated his demand for an inquiry, saying it will bring out the truth.

"The inquiry will make clear how inspector M C Sharma died and also whether the two people killed were terrorists or not," he said.

Yadav said the party will exert pressure on Congress-led UPA to reduce the prices of petroleum products.

UP never had democracy and the root cause of division in Indian societyBy: syad Razzak | 26-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward There was NO democracy in UP since independence. Only money and muscle power rule that state till now. Neither Mulayam nor Mayawati, nor Gandhi family ever tried to introduce real democracy in that state. As a result thousands are leaving that state when they get a trivial opportunity to go outside. Poor and marginalized people (please don’t bring caste here) are always neglected there. Division of Indian society on the basis of caste and religion started from that part of India. UP is always ruled by mafias like Mulayam, Amar, Mayawati or the most uncivilized, bruteThakurs and fundamentalist mullahs.
