Entrance will have display board with info on vacant slots; number of vehicles to be restricted
The proposal for full automation of parking lots in Sector 17 would entail installation of equipment wherein parking slips would be generated electronically. Sensors would be installed and display boards at entry points would indicate vacant slots. With the aim of regulating parking in the sector, the Municipal Corporation (MC) is in the process of preparing the proposal. The parking conditions in Sector 17 have been the centre of attention after a recent proposal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to make two parking lots vehicle-free. While the civic body has expressed its inability to implement this, measures are being suggested for regulation of the parking lots.
Initially,a proposal for complete automation is being prepared for four paid parking lots at the heart of the sector around the plaza. According to the proposal, commuters who want to enter the parking lot would be issued a token electronically. A display board would be installed at the entrance of the parking lot wherein information about the slots that are vacant would be available. Commuter would be able to park at any vacant slot.
The number of vehicles that would enter the parking lots would be restricted. Only when a slot is vacant would a vehicle would be allowed entry.
At present, the parking contractors allow much more vehicles than the space available to enter the parking lots. At times, this leads to chaos and traffic jams within the parking lots.
The MC had earlier too mooted a proposal for a fully automated parking lot in the sector. This was, however, dropped and a system for semi-automation was installed. This could never be made operational as the equipment that was installed was not as per specifications.
There were more than one entry/ exit points in the parking lots. However,a single boom barrier was installed without taking into consideration the fact that two-wheelers and four-wheelers have separate spaces to enter. A civic body official said that the preliminary proposal has been prepared. However, the finer details have to be worked out.
