Autorickshaws in Surat to go on 72-hour strike starting this midnight

The autorickshaw unions in Surat called for a 72-hour strike from Wednesday night protesting against the recent CNG price hike by the Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL).

GGCL has raised CNG prices from Rs 51.95 per kilogram to Rs 56.30 per kg with effect from Tuesday.

As many as 18 small and big autorickshaw unions in Surat city and district had called a meeting Tuesday at Ring road in Surat to discuss further course of action. After a discussion in this regard, the union leaders decided to go on 72-hour strike from Wednesday midnight.

The autorickshaw unions of Navsari, Valsad, Vapi, Tapi, Ankleshwar and Bharuch also remained present and supported decision.

Media convenor of Surat city and district Auto Federation Irfan Kapadia said, "We will not accept the decision of such price hike taken by GGCL and for that we have decided to go on strike and if the company fails to rethink over their decision we will intensify our strike in coming days. The GGCL is supplying CNG to Maharashtra and other states. In Mumbai, the gas price per kg is Rs 32.10, but in Gujarat the state government charges 15 per cent VAT per km of CNG which is highest in the country."
