AWBI bans greyhound races

Though district-level livestock competitions started a month ago, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) only on Friday banned greyhound races being organised in such competitions.

Greyhound races have already been held in Muktsar, Moga and other cities in November. As per AWBI orders, no such races can be organised in the future. Many farmers are known to invest heavily on various breeds.

Director (Animal Husbandry) Dr H S Sandha, who has already circulated the ban orders to district offices, said: "The idea behind such competitions is to make the various breeds popular. We will not be organising such races."

AWBI member Dr Sandeep Jain said: "We have also issued a notice regarding transport of animals. The participants must get a certificate from a veterinarian stating that the animal was fit for travel."
