The age-old tradition of Indian Ayurvedic medicine may be creating ripples in the Western world as an alternative form of medicine, but if one wants to trace its history through generations, a visit to Hatibagan Nabin Palli Puja pandal is a must this pujas.

The serpentine Ganendra Mitra lane in north Kolkata leads one to a saga of rich information and knowledge through myriad artistry on the oldest form of healthcare in the world which is estimated to date back to 5,000 to 10,000 years. With the idea to popularise and raise awareness about ancient Ayurveda, the Puja committee of Hatibagan Nabin Palli has taken pages out of the Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas.

“Ayurvedic knowledge was handed down orally through generations and then written down in the Vedas. Today, this form of medicine is being used even in the Western world,” said Kamaldip Dhar, a professor at Visva-Bharati, the artist who conceptualised the theme. “People have forgotten the rich history behind its evolution. In the name of Ayurveda, these days adulterated medicine is found in the markets. We want to raise awareness about it,” said Dhar.

The L-shaped pandal has been divided into four sections. The entrance has been given an earthen effect. The element of wood is reflected in the second phase of the pandal where idols of Lord Jagannath, Krishna, along with brother Balabhadra and sister Suvadra will be showcased. Along with the idols, different species of medicinal plants, herbs and trees adorn this part of the pandal.
