Azam forms panel to study Sachar report progress

Minority Welfare Minister Azam Khan has constituted a six-member committee, headed by Secretary of Minority Welfare Leena Jauhri,to study the status of implementation of Sachar Committee recommendations in the state

Minority Welfare Minister Azam Khan has constituted a six-member committee, headed by Secretary of Minority Welfare Leena Jauhri,to study the status of implementation of Sachar Committee recommendations in the state.

The committee has been tasked to prepare a status report on the implementation of those recommendations for which the state government is responsible. For those recommendations where no action has been taken, the report would be sent to the department concerned for taking suitable action. The report of the committee is expected to be ready before the coming Monsoon session of the Assembly.

The process to form the committee was set in motion soon after the visit of Union Minister for Minority Affairs K Rehman Khan in May. He said the Sachar Committee had made 72 recommendations for the uplift of Muslims. Of these, the Union government did not accept three and could not implement three others while the remaining 66 recommendations have been implemented.

The SP government, too, claims that it has implemented most recommendations of Sachar Committee that were its responsibility.

“Several recommendations, like nomination of Muslim members in unrepresented local bodies, government boards and corporations, have been fulfilled by the state government. We will be preparing a list of such recommendations that have been implemented ,” a committee member stated.

The recommendations that have been implemented will be highlighted as achievements of the state government.

The committee will also find ways for recognition of degrees from madarsas for eligibility in competitive examinations. It will also work out mechanisms whereby madarsas can be linked with a higher secondary school board so that students wanting to shift to a regular and mainstream education can do so after having passed from a madarsa as recommended by Sachar Committee.
