The UT Administration has cancelled contracts of Bed & Breakfast operators in the city, but it seemed to have forgotten to inform the public about it.
The Administration is still advertising for these B&B operators, complete with their contact details and tentative tariffs. The tourism information centres, public places and official website of the Administration (chandigarhtourism.gov.in) continue to display the lists of B&B operators.
The lists are prominently displayed at tourist information centres at Sukhna Lake, Sector-17 plaza and ISBT-17.
As a result, hundreds of tourists are being misled by the widely-publicised information about these operators.
“The Administration should have categorically publicised that the B&B operators are no longer authorised to rent out their premises and cautioned tourists lest they’re fleeced by them,” Nidhi, a student of Panjab University, said.
Sidharth Srivastava, an IT professional who came to the city from Tamil Nadu with his fiancé, said, “Since such schemes are quite popular in Europe and other western countries, we thought it would be nice if we could use such facilities in Chandigarh as well. The city administration should not display such misleading information if they have terminated ties with these operators.”
The list on display includes residential addresses and email ids of these operators. This, when notices for resumption of plots of these B&B operators, who don’t exist in the Administration’s records anymore, are underway.
“What is the purpose of such an order when the Administration continues to advertise for them?” a member of the Federation of Sectors’ Welfare Associations said.
