BA student shot at, cops say mistaken identity, hint at rivalry

In a case of ongoing rivalry between two groups, a second year graduation student was shot at when three motorcycle borne youths opened indiscriminate fire near the Double Park area of Rohtak on Tuesday. Sumit, a resident of Bohar village, who was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences at Rohtak by the passersby, was shot at as the miscreants mistook him from his friend Manoj with whom they have an ongoing rivalry.

According to the police, Sumit, Manoj and another friend, Rahul, all residents of Bohar village and students of Pandit Nekiram Sharma College, Rohtak, were going somewhere when the miscreants opened fire. The trio had clashed with a few residents of Roorkee village, who are also students of the same college. The assailants wanted to shoot Manoj, but mistook Sumit for Manoj and fired at him.

"Two pillion riders opened fire. While Sumit sustained two gunshot injuries, Manoj and Rahul ducked for cover. The assailants who escaped from the spot had covered the registration number plate of the motorbike with mud. It appears that the gunshots were fired from a country-made pistol," an investigating police official said.

"A few days ago, Manoj had a fight with three-four students of the same college in a bus. Sumit was also with Manoj at that time. Today's incident is purportedly in retaliation of the same fight. Though Sumit is not in a condition to get his statement recorded, but from various sources we have zeroed in on a few boys from Roorkee village, who are suspected to have committed this crime. We are conducting raids and will arrest them soon," said Vivek Sharma, Superintendent of police, Rohtak.
