  • The mother of Baby P or Peter was on Friday jailed indefinitely for her role in the abuse and death of the toddler while her former boyfriend was given a life sentence. The couple's 37-year-old lodger Jason Owen was also jailed indefinitely on the same charge - that of causing or allowing the child's death.

In a highly-anticipated sentencing at the Old Bailey in London, the little boy's 'stepfather' was handed a life sentence for his role in the abuse as well as for raping a two-year-old girl.

Judge Stephen Kramer told Baby P's mother she would be jailed indefinitely and serve at least five years for causing her son's death. Owen was also given an indeterminate sentence and told he would serve at least three years.

Any decent person who heard the catalogue of medical conditions and non-accidental injuries suffered by Peter cannot fail to have been appalled... It was clear that significant force had been used on Peter on a number of occasions, he said.

Baby Peter was 17 months old when he died in a blood-spattered cot in August 2007, having spent much of his life being used as "a punchbag".

He had suffered a catalogue of horrendous injuries and was found with a broken back and fractured ribs.

The human race's dark side is a terrifying thingBy: Nichola Smith | 29-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Those so called "parents" are disgusting excuses for human beings!! They didn't deserve to have the honour of having that beautiful baby in their care. I can't begin to find words to explain the pain I feel for kids like this. I treasure every moment I have with my 9mth old son - the good and the hard times. There is NO excuse for the hell of a time they gave poor baby P over his short life. It's gut wrenching he had to die before people saw something was wrong but sadly he's not the first
