Book on tenancy laws hits the stand in HP
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday released a book titled Commentary on the HP Tenancy and Land Reforms Act, which deals with deals with the crucial subject of the tenancy law that bars non-Himachalis to buy agricultural land in the state. The book has been authored by high court lawyer Abhishek Barowalia, the son of former principal secretary (Law) J N Barowalia. "Apart from dealing with the provisions of the Tenancy and Land Reforms Act in an elaborate manner, the author has not refrained from airing his views, based on extensive research, on Section 118 of the Act," said J N Barowalia.
Burglars flee from PNB ATM with Rs 8 lakh
HOSHIARPUR: Burglars broke open a Punjab National Bank ATM at Sham Churasi in Hoshiarpur district on the wee hours of Wednesday and decamped with Rs 8.80 lakh. While the ATM is located right next to the bank, the officials came to know about the incident when they reached the bank in the morning. According to the police, a gas cutter had been used to break open the machine. While the CCTV camera installed at the ATM was also found to be out of order, the bank had not deployed any security guard to keep vigil at night. A case has been registered against unidentified persons.
Bishnoi demands Speaker's removal
New Delhi: Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) chief Kuldeep Bishnoi on Wednesday hit out at state Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Sharma for making objectionable remarks against him and demanded that he be removed immediately. "He (Speaker) has destroyed the prestige of the position he holds. After using derogatory language against me, he should not stay as Speaker even for a minute," Bishnoi said. The Haryana Assembly Speaker had called Bishnoi a fukra (loafer). The HJC chief said he intends to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to seek removal of Sharma. The Speaker had made the comments after dismissing a petition of HJC seeking disqualification of five party MLAs who had crossed over to Congress.
Gurdaspur rape accused in custody
Gurdaspur: The seven accused in the gangrape of a 29-year-old woman, who had alleged that she was lured by bus driver Daler Singh and conductor Ravi to a Gurdaspur village where the duo and five others allegedly raped her, were remanded in14-day judicial custody by Ilaqa Magistrate Rajesh Ahluwalia before whom the accused were present. The accused include Jaswinder Singh, Jagpreet Singh, Satwant Singh, Gora and Sarabjit Singh.
Looters kill man, flee with cash, jewellery
Gurdaspur: A gang of looters killed a man in Ghuman Kalan village and decamped with Rs. 60 thousand in cash and 150 grams of gold on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, police said on Wednesday. "The looters targeted the house of Channo Rani, a eunuch and attacked Rani's driver Pervez Masih, his wife Usha and few other family members of Pervez who lived in the house of Rani. The victims were sleeping. After inflicting injuries on Pervez, Channo Rani and Pervez's daughter Catherine, the looters fled with Rs 60,000 and 15 tolas of gold jewellery. Pervez died when taken to hospital, Rani is undergoing treatment for the injuries and Catherine has been discharged from the hospital after being administered treatment," Ghuman Kalan SHO Jarnail Singh said.
