  • A day before RPI activists went on a rampage at the office of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee in protest against the ‘eviction’ of Athawale from his official residence in Delhi, the Azad Maidan police had averted a controversy over Babasaheb Ambedkar’s photos.

The police arrested the manager of Cannon Pav Bhaji outlet located opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station on a complaint that he was using paper bags that had images of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar printed on them to wrap food.

“On Thursday, a customer who would frequent the outlet arrived at the police station and informed us that paper bags and envelopes which had photos of Ambedkar were being used to wrap food parcels for takeaways. Realising the seriousness of the situation, we went to the outlet and found 16 bags with photos of Ambedkar printed on them that were being used to wrap food,” said senior police inspector B Bhawale of the Azad Maidan police station.

The manager, Kuldeep Singh, who was responsible for procuring materials used to parcel food, was arrested for intentionally trying to hurt the religious beliefs and sentiments of a community. He has been remanded in police custody until September 22.
