I know if I go back home to Bahrain I will get killed, but I cannot stay here and see my family and nation die. I am ready to sacrifice myself for my country,” said 20-year-old Reza Mohammed Jasim,a Baharaini student from Pune University who returned home on Wednesday to participate in the protests and protect his family from the escalating violence.
Jasim, who has been in Pune for the past two years studying business administration,is supposed to take his second-year exams nine days later. “I last met my family two years ago and since then I do not know how they are doing. Two days ago,I spoke to my sister who told me that my 15 brothers had left home to fight for the country and have not returned. I cannot stay here while my siblings are dying. I do not have any weapon, but I will still fight. Everyday many people are dying in my country and I am helpless here,” Jasim told The Indian Express.
Jasim is from coastal Baniyamia village on the west of Bahrain. His mother,a homemaker,is at present helping the staff in hospitals around their village to treat the injured, while his father, who is physically handicapped,is at home. Jasim was planning to develop his father’s electronics shop after getting his business administration degree.
“Who can study when the situation at home is this dangerous. My family is unprotected and I want to go back to protect them,” said Jasim. “I love India, but my homeland is Bahrain and we will not allow any other nation to capture it,” said Jasim.
“Our people are not biased towards any sect. It is the government that wants us to fight among ourselves. Without weapons I know we will not be able to face the military, but we will die protecting our country,” added Jasim.
Like Jasim many other Baharainian students in Pune are expected to return home soon. Most of them will leave as soon as their exams are over or within this week, said Jasim.
