Bahraini student of UoP arrested back home

A month after a student from Bahrain studying in Pune University,Reza Mohammed Jasim, left for his home country to be part of the pro-democracy movement there

A month after a student from Bahrain studying in Pune University,Reza Mohammed Jasim, left for his home country to be part of the pro-democracy movement there,he is believed to have been arrested by the police for taking part in protests. This has prompted his college-mates from Bahrain pursuing studies in Pune to drop their plans to return to their country and join the protests, fearing they too may be arrested.

Twenty-year-old Jasim had returned home on March 17 to participate in the protests without giving his exams.

A student from Pune University and Jasim’s friend said that when they contacted their families, they were told to stay back and not return. “When I called my family they told me that the police had knocked on Jasim’s door and arrested him for being part of the anti-Bahrain protests in India and speaking to the media against them. The police have also seized his laptop,” said the student,on the condition of anonymity.

“I fear that if I speak to the media,my family would land in trouble in Bahrain. However my colleagues and I who were planning to join Jasim in the fight back home, have dropped the idea as our families have informed us that the police are on the lookout for students studying abroad protesting against them. They allow the students to enter the country without trouble but later arrest them. Fearing this we dropped the plan to return at least for the time being,” added the 20-year-old student. “We would stay here and give our exams. We are scared that we might lose our lives if we go back,” said the student.

Jasim, who had been in Pune for the past two years studying business administration, was supposed to take his second-year exam. He left the country to be with his family and fight for democracy instead.

Jasim’s friend told The Express that they had got information of his arrest from relatives via Facebook and phone. His mother,a homemaker,is helping the staff in hospitals around their village to treat the injured, while his father, who is physically handicapped,is at home, added the friend.
