Bal Gandharva,a film based on the life of legendary Bal Gandharva, the biggest showman of the Marathi cinema, will have some tunes by Boston-based jazz violinist Christian Howes. It will be the first Marathi film that will have a western artiste playing for the orchestra.
Art director Nitin Desai, the producer of this biopic, feels that Howes music in the film will give a new dimension to Marathi cinema. Bal Gandharva himself had a very unconventional approach towards music and since music has no boundaries,we didnt want to limit our thinking pattern while planning the music for the film, said Desai.
A classically-trained player,Howes is a renowed name in the world of jazz and has played with the likes of Steve Turre,Randy Brecker,Dafnis Prieto,D D Jackson,Greg Osby,Les Paul and so on. For Howes too, this is the first time as far as working for a Marathi film is concerned. Howes plans to bring about some changes in his style to suit the taste of Marathi film audience. Ive worked to emulate the style of the vocalists in the music I have heard. The music is very subtle, beautiful and I find the style incredibly moving and deep, he told The Indian Express.
Although, the films audio album has 21 songs,Howes has done the string-section for the song Nahi Mee Bolat Naath, which is a part of play Sangeet Manapamaan, one of the sequences in the film. Kaushal Inamdar, the music director of the film, said,I wanted authentic orchestral tunes for this particular number and that is when I approached Howes. I shot a mail to Howes regarding the project at 12.30 pm and I got a reply for him at 5.30 in the morning.
The films core team includes four national awardees – producer Nitin Desai, director Ravi Jadhav, costume designer Neeta Lulla and screenplay writer Swanand Kirkire. Emphasising on how the film is deeply connected to Pune,Inamdar said,The film is very close to Pune because this is where legend Bal Gandharva breathed his last. Actor Subodh Bhave, who plays the lead character in the film, and lead singer Anand Bhate, who has lent his voice for the songs sung by the character of Bal Gandharva, hail from Pune.
