In view of the Punjab bandh to be observed by various Sikh organisations on November 3, government transport agencies and private bus operators have asked for special security at bus stands and on prominent roads to ensure that no damage is done to life and property. Commercial vehicle operators in some parts of the state have even decided to suspend their operations for a few hours in the day tomorrow to avoid any untoward incident.
Talking to The Indian Express, Perneet Singh, GM, Punjab Roadways, Jalandhar depot, said,”We have asked the district administrations to provide extra security at bus stands. In Jalandhar, movement of 2,600 buses takes place daily, while the number is 3,000 in Ludhiana. We intend to continue our services, but we need extra security.” Sources said many private bus operators too have decided to suspend their services tomorrow.
In Muktsar region, traders have been informed by their suppliers that no fresh supplies will arrive on Tuesday. Prithivi Raj Sharma, president of Ludhiana Transport Welfare Association, said, “We have decided to suspend truck movement during the day on Tuesday. The trucks will either be sent late in the evening or the next day, as we cannot afford any risk. But our booking counters will remain open.”
The administration is also gearing up for the bandh. Kamal Kishore Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, Ferozepur, said, “Twelve duty magistrates will be available in their respective areas to oversee the law and order situation. Extra police personnel have also been deployed in the busy markets, at the bus stands and railway station.” Ludhiana DC Vikas Garg too said the administration had made adequate arrangements.
