Bandra ‘rapist’ arrested; in 2008 he had assaulted a Chinese woman

A day after a Spanish musician was allegedly raped by a burglar at her home in Bandra, Mumbai Police sources said suspected rapist Mohammed Baadshah Mohammed Ismail Ansari had been booked in the past for a similar crime — "outraging the modesty" of a Chinese woman in a nearby area.

Ansari was arrested on Tuesday and booked for rape and burglary.

Police sources said he was a known criminal, with a long history of theft and robbery cases across the city. In 2008, he allegedly broke into an apartment in Khar in a similar manner and groped a Chinese national before she raised an alarm and he was nabbed, they said.

"Baadshah is a notorious criminal, who has been booked for dozens of cases of burglaries and robberies in the past. In 2008, he was arrested while carrying out a crime with striking similarities to the one he is suspected to have committed in Bandra on Monday.

"He scaled a building and crept into an apartment through an open window. There was a Chinese lady sleeping alone in the room, and he took liberties with her. However, no rape was committed, as there were other people sleeping in the apartment who heard the victim's cries and ran to her aid," said an officer. "He was booked for assault or criminal force with intent to outrage her modesty," he said.

Sources said among the buildings targeted by Ansari was the home of a senior Congress leader's son in Worli. In February last year, Crime Branch arrested Ansari and a jeweller, Sanjay Shankarlal Jain, in connection with a theft at the home of Vinay Patil, son of former state PWD minister Rohidas Patil.
