The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which was inaugurated by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in Mumbai on Tuesday, will be named as 'Rajiv Gandhi Setu'.

The proposal for the same was mooted by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar after the formal inauguration and immediately accepted by Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.

Recalling the late Prime Minister's contribution in India's progress as an Information Technology giant, Pawar said it was Rajiv who infused scientific temper in the new generation.

"He (Rajiv) sowed the seeds of a telecom and IT revolution and in the last two decades, India and Indians have earned a place of pride in the global IT sector," he said.

In a veiled attack on the Shiv Sena and MNS' 'sons of the soil campaign', the NCP chief said "Rajiv Gandhi was a Bhoomiputra (son of the soil) belonging to Mumbai."

Referring to the fact that Mumbai was Rajiv's birth place he said, "there is no 'Bhoomiputra' from Mumbai except Rajiv Gandhi, who gave a new direction and vision to the future generations of the country."

Meanwhile, Chavan thanked Pawar for the appropriate decision, while Sonia Gandhi expressed her gratitude to Pawar and the Chief Minister for naming the state-of-the-art sea-link after her husband.

Bandra Worli Sea LinkBy: Vijay Parekh | 14-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward 1. No matter what name is chosen, there will always be disagreement and a show of sycophancy or vote oriented self positioning by political outfits2. No matter what name is chosen, the long names always end getting abbreviated e.g. CST (for Victoria Teminus
Not fairBy: daya sagar | 12-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Rajiv Jee deserves all respects and regards. But he belongs to a political party that is thriving in the name of Nehru Gandhi. So naming a mass welfare project afte Rajiv Jee gives unfair political milage to Congress since over 50 % indians are very poor and could mistake the state expenditure as having done by a particular family. This practice has to be stopped. Better name it as Chattarpati Shiva Jee Setu or any other freedom fighter who did not taste political power at New Delhi after 14 August 1947 or why not after Subash chnader Bose or Bhagat Singh or Raj Guru or Lala Laj Pat Rai or Tilak or Gokhle.
