  • The last week’s mutiny by Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) jawans has forced the senior officers of its Indian counterpart, the Border Security Force (BSF), to sit up and take note of the problems its jawans face in the line of duty.

Though officers said there was nothing to fear, they pointed out the disparity in pay and working conditions between the Army and the BSF, which forms the country’s first line of defence.

“We have a very strong system and while one can never say with certainty that something similar will never happen here, we have faith in our jawans as they share a healthy relationship with the officers,” said a senior BSF officer who did not wish to be named.

He said besides holding games like football and volleyball between the jawans and officers to build a sense of camaraderie between them, there is also a practice of “vertical interaction”, where everyone, from the IG down the line, including the group-D staff, sit down to discuss problems. “Everyone participates in this to discuss the problems they are facing in their work,” he said.

Moreover, the BSF also holds Sainik Sammelans during which senior officers visit the far-flung outposts to have interaction with the jawans. There are also nodal officers at various levels to hear out the grievances of the jawans and address them or to pass them on to higher level.

However, the officer said there are some rumblings within the BSF jawans after the removal of the posts of lance naik and naik by the Fifth Pay Commission.

    ... contd.

ResponseBy: Atul | 05-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward The news item has missed the moot point that draws a parallel between the BSF and the BDR across the Bangladeshi borders. The main grouse for the BSF personnel is that despite having their own Officer cadre the top posts in BSF are being grabbed by the IPS who despite being outsiders are calling the shots in BSF. In fact, the same story gets repeated in most of the CPMFs and CPOs where the cadre Officers do not get to reach the pinnacle of the organisation they serve in. The service conditions in Army and the CPMFs can not be compared as the terms and conditions of service are entirely different.
IndiaBy: KRISHNA | 03-Mar-2009 Reply | Forward I hope the conditions will improve far better if our politicians, beurocrats and senior colleagues of respected security forces should take a leaf out of our neighbours experience and work towards the betterment of job as well as living conditions of our security personal who are involved in country's internal as well as external security. They should be given enough oppurtunities, encouragement and monitory benefits. It always helps if we can lend our time to hear their problems and try to solve it avaoding red tapism. The best example of growing resentement was demonstared by our retired officers bymeans of returning their seva medals to the Govt.of India, which were given to them for their service to the country.I think the time has come to address their long standing issues with more sincerety and honesty. Else we have to meet the same fate one day.Jai Ho!Jai Hind !
