Bansal announces Rs 2-cr aid for PGI

Union Minister of Railways and Chandigarh MP Pawan Kumar Bansal on Saturday announced an aid of Rs 2 crore, from the MPLADS fund, for upgradation work at various PGI departments. He also inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the premier institute, which is commemorating fifty years of its existence with a two-day alumni meet.

Bansal and others on the dais lit the ceremonial lamp and released a compendium on PGI's achievements over the past fifty years. Earlier, Punjab Cabinet Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon recollected his memories of PGI as a child and appreciated the progress the Institute had made, particularly in increasing bed strength from 225 beds to 2,000 today.

Prof Yogesh Chawla, director, PGIMER, while welcoming the guests said: "PGI alumni have done well not only in India but across the globe and are holding key positions in various reputed medical institutes in Europe, USA and Asia, some of whom are with us today. In fact the President of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav and Mookeshwar Choonee, Minister of Arts and Culture, Mauritius are our proud students. An alumni cell has been established at the Institute."

"In this journey of 50 years, PGI has made a significant contribution in the field of medical education, research and quality patient care. It now has a faculty strength of almost 500 personnel and more than 8,000 other staff members, including nurses and technicians. In the last year, we have taken care of 18 lakh outdoor patients and almost 67,000 admissions. The average patient attendance per day in our OPD is almost 7,000," Dr Chawla added.

Prof I C Pathak, the senior most faculty and former PGI director, appreciated the strides the Institute had made in his lifetime.

Over 600 alumni were present at the function and participated in the convention.
