A Group of students from Basava International School,New Delhi, joined hands with slum children to hold a skit in Tarachand Colony,Mahipalpur. The event was held as part of My School,My Voice,an interactive programme aimed at making children participate actively in society.
During the event, both the groups performed skits (nukkad nataks) that helped them understand each others lives better. Teachers said it also helped spread social awareness through hands-on experience, something that cannot be learnt from textbooks.
Kids from poor backgrounds usually do not get to see the world around them, and they miss a lot. Through this event, they got an opportunity to discuss and debate several issues, said Pallavi,a teacher with Basava International School.
Besides bringing children from different walks of life together,My School,My Voice also provides information on subjects such as the Right to Education Act.
The programme was organised by Childreach International,a grassroots charity organisation.Naresh Choudhary, country director,of the NGO,said,It was the first step forward in our bigger movement, called My School My Voice, which will be launched in various schools across India in a few weeks from now. The fundamental idea was to bring children from very different backgrounds on the same platform as others. It can present sustainable solutions for many social issues that we face.
