The CPI(M) seems to be making serious efforts to reach out to Taslima Nasreen. In a 25-minute conversation with the Bangladeshi writer two days back, senior party leader Jyoti Basu reportedly told her that they could explore ways to facilitate her return to Kolkata.
According to sources, the conversation took place on the same day that External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee spoke with her.
CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat is also reported to have made a “courtesy call” to Taslima. But when contacted by The Indian Express, she refused to comment.
CPI(M) central committee member and Kerala Education Minister M A Baby also spoke to the writer.
The party’s official stand has been that “where Taslima has to stay and the renewal of her visa are issues that are dealt with by the Centre, and the state government has no role to play in it.” But the CPI(M) has been facing criticism from many sections for the manner in which Taslima was made to “the secular and progressive Bengal”.
