In signs of further strain in ties between the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Delhi 2010 organisers, Indian Olympic Association chief Suresh Kalmadi today sought the recall of chief executive Mike Hooper but CGF president Mike Fennell rejected the demand.

Fennell told The Indian Express over phone from Jamaica: “I cannot accede to this request from Mr Kalmadi. We will issue a full statement on this tomorrow.”

On Monday, Fennell had announced the appointment of an independent panel of foreign experts to monitor preparations for Delhi 2010 on a monthly basis. This prompted the IOA to launch a scathing attack on the CGF today, especially against Hooper.

At a media briefing which began with the demand that Hooper be removed from Delhi — he has been living here for the past two years — and deteriorated to allegations of “imperialism” over the CGF’s critique of the Kalmadi-led Organising Committee (OC), the IOA put in motion events that it may have no control over in the days to follow.

The IOA recommended to the OC that the panel be rejected, and then launched a personal attack on Hooper, calling him “of no use” and an “impediment to the functioning of the OC”.

“Despite spending two years here, Hooper was hampering progress rather than being of any use. We have asked the CGF to call him back and send someone else, who can be useful to us, as his replacement,” Kalmadi told reporters.

Sitting alongside, BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra, in his capacity as an executive board member of the IOA, went a step further: “These are Commonwealth Games and not Imperial Games. India is a sovereign country. We don’t want others to force things on us and keep us on tenterhooks every month.”

    ... contd.

India and commonwealth.By: Anubhav Bhargava | 18-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Whatever are the differences between the two bodies they must be resolved soon and amicably. No matter who is saying what here the prestige of India is at stake and if India fails to host a successful commonwealth games it will seriously dent India's image seriously. So, please resolve the differences and give India a pride and joyful moment to relish for a longtime as a successful host of Commonwealth Games.
INCOMPETENT GOVT OFFICIALSBy: NIRANJAN | 18-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward FIRING KALMADI WILL NOT HELP. ANY REPLACEMENT WOULD BE EQUALLY INCOMPETENT IF NOT WORSE. ANY GOVT OFFICAL'S MAIN AIM IS TO GET AM MUCH MONEY OUT OF ANY PROJECT THAT IS UNDER THEIR CONTROL. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE CWG OFFICAL SMELLED A RAT OF CORRUPTION AND HENCE KALMADI WANTS TO GET RID OF HIM. I AM CERTAIN THAT MANY GOVT. OFFICIALS HAVE BECOME OR WILL BECOME MULTI-MILLIONAIRES FROM THE CWG.
Battlelines :Fennel rejects Kalmadi's sack the CEO demandBy: Premangsu Chowdry | 16-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The Commonwealth Games are the responsibility of the Commonwealth;CGF is its apex body for overall direction; India is the venue and the organisers on behalf of the CGF for the 2010 Games; The decision of the CGF to have an independent monitoring panel is most unfortunate; one hopes that it was not due to any misundrstanding or highhandedness, and the intention was purely to assist to speed up the preparations; the latter obviously are lagging behind to create the concern leading to the present situation. A joint advisory panel would have been the ideal answer, not someone breathing down the necks of our organisers, who will naturally feel uncomfortable. The CGF decision can still be amended and an amicable solution reached. The preparations must be speeded up with our Nation's name at stake. With tact and every effort at our disposal, an imbroglio can be avoided for the success of the games with our traditional showmanship.
IOC IS GONE CASEBy: DINESH | 16-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward We should throw away Mr. Suresh Kalmadi as I feel that this fellow does't know any game nor he has participate in any.Person for this position should be sports man who has won some respect. On the feild not on the thread-mill.
