What’s it about? The show takes the viewers on a trip to Alaska and controversial American politician,Sarah Palin,is the gracious tour guide. The eight-part series not only explores the scenic and picturesque locales of Alaska, but also gives an insight into Sarah’s personal life as she spends time with her husband Todd and their five children. They go fishing in Bristol Bay,scale mountains,go river-rafting,cook together, celebrate Fourth of July and stand on the ‘perfect family’ pedestal. From Todd’s grandmother to Sarah’s grandson, the five generations come under one roof and give the viewers an opportunity to visit places such as Sitka,Dillingham and Ekuk, which

remain rather unheard of even today. The show explores the family’s fishing business, looks into the hobbies of various members and explores their

inter-personal relationships.

Who’s in it? Apart from Sarah,Todd and the children, the show also features members from the Palins’ extended family. Todd’s fishing friends, his crew, their cousins and TV personality Kate Gosselin, also become part of the Alaska adventure. The Palin children — Bristol,Willow,Track,Trig and Piper — along with Bristol’s son Tripp get the most screen space.

What’s hot? It rarely happens that a vice-presidential candidate of the US gets this candid about her life. Sarah keeps politics out of the show and is often seen juggling various relationships. The children, surprisingly, come across as well-grounded and their individual characters come out rather well on the show. The former governor gets candid about her relationship with Todd and even breaks down as she talks about her youngest son,Trig, who suffers from Down’s Syndrome. The excellent production values of the show make it a fun watch and the non-political life of the former governor of Alaska is intriguing.

What’s not? Despite taking a candid look into the life of the Palins, any reference to Bristol becoming an unwed mother to Tripp has been skipped. A strong opposer to sex education in school,Sarah,at one point, found her own daughter turn into a prime example of why it is required. However, the show, which is from Sarah’s point of view, does not give away hints of possible discords or disturbances. The Palins continue to behave like one big happy family, save discussions of Trig.

Sarah’s monotonous narrative in the middle of the show can sometimes drag on. Also, there is a lot of content packed in each episode of the show and you wish the series

was longer.

Should you be watching it? We suggest you don’t miss the show. It’s pacey, informative and the big,fat American family comes across as more than just a stereotype.
