Be on Facebook to monitor complaints: NHAI to developers

The National Highways Authority of India has directed the road developers to open their account on social networking website Facebook.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed the road developers to open their account on social networking website Facebook. The step is aimed to enable the highway users to interact and register their complaints directly with the developers handling the road project. NHAI has sent a letter to all the developers in this regard.

For interaction with highway users,NHAI has already opened its account on Facebook. On that page, road users register their complaint or give suggestions regarding highway stretches. NHAI officials said that whenever they receive a complaint about any highway project on Facebook, they communicate that to the concerned developers, also known as concessionaires,of the highway project.

Authorities said most of the NHAI projects are now being implemented on Built,Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. In BOT system, concessionaires handling the road projects awarded by NHAI are key stakeholders in the development and maintenance of national highways entrusted to NHAI. Concessionaires have to maintain the highway project for 20 to 30 years after their development. But as highway users remain unaware about the system, they directly complaint to NHAI.

“We transfer that complaint to concessionaire concerned who takes necessary action. But all that process takes over a month sometimes. When these concessionaires will have their own Facebook accounts, highway users and other persons would be able to register their complaints directly to them. It will reduce the response time,” said Rajiv Yadav,Member (Administration),NHAI.

NHAI has also posted the name and contract details of the concessionaires on the Facebook and its website so that NHAI users may know the jurisdiction of each concessionaire. Officials said the agreements of over 150 projects signed between NHAI and concessionaires have been posted on NHAI’s website— http://www.nhai.org.
