Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has asked the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to make arrangements for the baptism ceremony of Balwant Singh, who is on death row for assassinating former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.

Balwant had recently written to the jathedar that he wanted to be baptised as a Sikh but could not be released from prison for the purpose and hence the ceremony should be arranged at Chandigarh’s high-security Burail Jail.

The jathedar said he had received the letter,in which Balwant had expressed his desire to “die as a baptised Sikh”.
