Khan greets his fans at Atlantic City, US.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was detained and questioned at the Newark Airport in New Jersey for almost two hours on Friday, ostensibly because of his surname. Ironically, Khan’s forthcoming film, the Karan Johar-directed My Name Is Khan, deals with the story of a moderate Muslim whose life is impacted by post-9/11 America.

The 43-year-old actor was pulled aside after his name cropped up in the airport’s database following a random check on parameters like age and origin. He was told he had a “common name” and that was causing the delay. Khan, who said he felt “angry and humiliated”, was headed to Chicago to attend a parade marking India’s Independence Day.

After checking him and his baggage, officials at the airport allowed Khan to proceed, but only after the Indian Consul General identified him. “I was really hassled at the American airport because my name is Khan. They interrogated me for a couple of hours, wanting to know if I knew anyone in America. While all around people from India and Pakistan were vouching for me, these guys just wouldn’t let me through,” Shah Rukh Khan said.

“Finally they allowed me to make a call, which I did, and the Indian Consulate helped me through. (This is) absolutely uncalled for, I think...I had just finished working there for more than a month. They said I have a common name, which was causing the delay. They checked my bags. I felt angry and humiliated,” he added.

“It is understood that Mr Shah Rukh Khan is currently touring the USA. He flew into Newark international airport late last evening (Indian time), where he was taken aside for ‘secondary questioning’. The Consul General of India got in touch with him immediately upon learning about the incident. Mr Khan said that he was all right. The Consulate offered him any assistance that he may require,” an MEA spokesperson said. “The Ministry has separately taken up the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi, which is ascertaining factual details,” the spokesperson added.

INDIAN EMBASSY ROLE IN KHAN EPISODEBy: NIRANJAN | 17-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward INDIAN EMBASSY WANTS TO CLAIM THAT IT WAS THEIR INTERVENTION THAT ALLOWED KHAN TO BE RELEASED, BUT KHAN SAID ON TV THAT HE WAS RELEASED BEFORE THE EMBASSY GOT INVOLVED. ALSO, PRAFUL PATEL SHOULD CONCENTRATE ON HOW HE IS GOING TO SAVE AIR INDIA AND NOT INVOLVE HIMSELF IN SUCH POPULIST ISSUES.
SRK By: Varind | 16-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward SRK was quesioned because his name pooped in computer containing names of personnel under "Look Out" list. Therefore no need to make a mountain of a mole hill. It is not imperative for US Security personnel at Newark Airprot to know SRK, the famous bollywood actor. The security officers were doing there duty hence the issue is being unnecessarily raked up. As far statment of Mrs. Ambica Soni "Tit for Tat" is unwarranted and irresponsible. Where was the TIT for TAT when Pakistani terrorists held Mumbai under seize for 59 hours and had killed more than 200 innocent people? Nevertheless, if in India we don't bother much about secuirty atleast we should not balme USA for adopting strict security measures. Many people visiting USA go through such time consuming questioning and it is not fair to highlight SRK because he is an Indian celebrity. SRK is a true secularist and no one can deny this fact. There is no need to add fuel in the fire.
CAN WE INDIANS GROW UP PLEASEBy: moonflower | 16-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward how many times has shahrukh khan travelled to US .. since every other movie he works in is shot in USA .. not to forget his tours and personal vacations .. so how many times was he "interrogated" in a "humiliating" manner .. the "coincidence" of the timing of his "detention" and the theme of his soon to be released film is just hard to be missed ... and one immigration officer might have "acted stupidly" (borrowing Mr. Obama's words :)) , on a more serious note how does a country ensure its security without screening any person who steps on their shores on any grounds whatsoever .. what if such incident would have happened to a not-so-famous indian , would there be such an outcry over it .. or is like our filmstars and politicians want themselves to be treated above law not only in India (where it is the order of the day) but elsewhere in the world .. may be Mr.PM can take a cue from his US counterpart and invite SRK and the immigration officer and talk over beer or maybe chai :)
KHANBy: HOLIDAYKEYWEST | 16-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward The opinions posted so far are quite alarming. However, we all have an opinion and each one is infinitely valuable. We have to see all sides and realize that there are really people out there that are incredibly ignorant. Profiling is a reality. I myself was "profiled" and detained and interrogated IN FRONT OF MY WORKPLACE! I'm a brown person and I had a backpack and what really is troublesome to accept is that there were several others stopped but none interrogated and none of them were female, none were blond and blue-eyed. Brown people need to stand up every single time something like this happens. Don't let the authorities get away with this injustice. SPEAK UP!CUBATOURS.US
