BEd admission: Govt asks colleges to fill up vacant seats directly

The state government asked BEd Colleges on Wednesday to fill vacant seats directly, after the Lucknow University (LU) failed to fill these seats through the regular procedure of centralised counselling.

According to guidelines, colleges having BEd courses are expected to form their own committees for admission and can directly admit candidates based on rank.

Last month, some colleges had moved the Supreme Court after BEd seats in their institutes remained vacant in spite of three rounds of counselling conducted by the LU. The university was given the responsibility to conduct BEd Entrance Examination 2010.

The third and final round of counselling — for students between rank one and 2.5 lakh — ended on November 23. But still, about 2,100 seats remain vacant.

Through an official press release, Special Secretary (Higher Education) V K Gupta has said that the step was taken in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling.

He has asked the LU registrar to put up advertisements in newspapers saying that candidates between rank 2.5 lakh and 2.75 lakh can take admission in colleges directly within 10 days of the advertisements being published.

The colleges will not be allowed to charge any extra fee from the candidates apart from the fee decided by the government, the release added.
