Whether it is a visit to a market or to traffic signals, city residents as well as tourists are hounded by beggars. While authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to their menace, there seems to be no escape for people.
Popular markets of Sector 15,17,19,22,24,35 are flooded with beggars. The Inter State Bus Terminals of Sector 17 and Sector 43 are also places where the beggars not only trouble the local residents with their notorious ways but also torment tourists visiting the city. The beggars have not spared even Chandigarh Airport and Chandigarh Railway Station.
Give alms to one beggar and be ready to be stormed by their gang to embarrass you in public, complained Sunita Bhandari,a student.
Different approaches are cleverly used for different people to generate alms. Students are wished with a good career, youngsters are blessed with spouses wit looks of a movie star whereas the middle aged are showered with blessings for a good future for their kids.
These beggars get onto your nerves when they chase you asking for something to be given. More is less for them, they even scream at you when they get nothing said Sneh Thakur, another troubled resident.
Following people, clinging to the windows of vehicles are also practiced along with sympathy evoking actions. They openly use foul language and scream profanities against those who refuse to give them anything.
The menace takes an ugly turn when these beggars beg for alms at traffic signals, not only disrupting traffic but also putting their lives at risk. The Social Welfare Department had started rehabilitation centre for the beggars, but little else that has been done. We run Snehalaya and old age homes for minors, women and men respectively who are involved in the act of beggary, said Varsha Khangwal,Director Social Welfare Department.
