Beleaguered Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is arriving in New Delhi on Tuesday for talks with the Congress leadership in the wake of his offer of resignation following the Mumbai terror attacks.

The discussions on the issue of successor to Deshmukh would gain momentum after his arrival here, Congress sources said.

They said that the CM would leave for Delhi after seeing off President Pratibha Patil, who is currently in Mumbai, in the afternoon.

Deshmukh will hold talks with Congress President Sonia Gandhi as well as senior leaders including A K Antony, who is in-charge of party affairs of Maharashtra and also Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel.

NCP leader Shard Pawar and Antony are also expected to have discussions on the issue, the sources said.

"We are not against anyone and our only expectation is that the leader in Maharashtra should be decided after consulting us as it is a coalition government," union minister and NCP leader Praful had said on Monday.

Union Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and AICC General Secretary Prithviraj Chavan are strong contenders for the top post in Maharashtra.

The name of Maharashtra Minister Ashok Chavan is also being referred to by a section in the Congress. Narayan Rane, a former Chief Minister, has also been an aspirant for the top state post for long.

While Deshmukh offered to resign, his deputy R R Patil has already put in his papers.

Beleaguered Deshmukh summoned to DelhiBy: Rajendra Patel | 02-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward This is for Ritesh Deshmukh--If you are youth and have mettale in you please give some courage your father to act moraly. He should not have to ask Sonia Gandhi instead he should ask his own soul. He would have asked Sonia to resign even in case you would been killed in this attack I bet. He would have played politics on your DEATH. INDIAN PEOPLE WOULD HAVE NOT REACTED IN A WAY THEY ARE REACTING NOW BECAUSE COMMON PEOPLE KILLED BUT IF POLITICIAN OR THEIR KINS HAVE BEEN KILLED PEOPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY.

mumbai terror strikesBy: satsh jodhani | 02-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward even though rr patil was not alerted regarding date, time, route and venue of attacks on mumbai, he acted very swiftly and saved lives of 4800 people. As admitted by him terrorists wanted to kill 5000 people. it is very sad that such an efficient home minister was made to resign.
R R PatilBy: Bharat | 02-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Please correct your facts- Mumbai police was total failure to handle the situation so NSG has taken over which is not governed by Patil or Deshmukh. Polticians in Maharashtra are good at shouting but they do nothing...
