Bilawal was anointed Benazir Bhutto’s successor based on her “will”. It was a handwritten note, prepared by her on October 16, two days before she flew back to Pakistan.
But Bhutto chose to leave it behind with a “trusted someone” — her domestic help, Seeta.
PPP sources say she had told aides that “a letter will reach you automatically after I am killed”.
Originally from the Philippines, Seeta has served the Bhutto family for nearly 15 years now and looks after their children. She has lived with the family in Dubai and London and travels with them.
When news of the will came out, everyone thought Bhutto must have kept it with Naheed Khan, her personal secretary and longtime friend.
But Bhutto’s reasons for choosing Seeta were two: one, she trusted her well enough. Second, Seeta was an apolitical member of her universe.
Seeta brought the will with her on December 28, when she came to Pakistan with Bhutto’s children.
The will said that Bilawal should be made chairman of the PPP once he attained maturity, and till then Zardari should run the party. Zardari, however, opted to leave the top post to son.
