Bengal top cop to launch outfit to fight corruption, may contest polls

IPS officer Nazrul Islam — in news for criticising the state government in his book — is gearing up to launch "a socio-political platform" which, according to him, will fight corruption and discrimination of people based on caste, community, creed and religion.

The incumbent Additional Director General of Police (Training) will name his outfit 'Mul niwasi samity' (Association of people from the roots). "The organisation will work for the Constitutional rights of the backward people, irrespective of caste, creed and religion," said Islam.

The members of the group, however, admit having set their eyes on the 2016 Assembly polls and say that they will field candidates in the election. Naya Zamana, an outfit formed by rebel CPM leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah, and Saifullalah Chowdhury's Party for Democratic Socialism are likely to join hands with Islam.

Sources said the organisation will comprise state, district, block and booth levels committees. The state committee held its first meeting in September, said sources. Noted author Piyus Kanti Roy is the president and Islam is the secretary general of the organisation.
