Better access to ISBT,more facilities to ease chaos at Nizamuddin station

To decongest the busy Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station — one of the most important links to the Capital — the Northern Railways has initiated work on its plan to upgrade the station’s second entry/exit point towards the Sarai Kale Khan inter-state bus terminus (ISBT).

The entry from the ISBT side caters to approximately 50 per cent of passengers coming to the station. To facilitate easy movement, the Railways are planning an additional platform on this side that will directly lead into the station premises. tform no 8
The station will also be linked to the adjacent ISBT through a walkway, construction of which is being undertaken by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS),a special purpose vehicle created by the Delhi government to implement its transport schemes.

“The locomotive and goods sheds located here are now being shifted to a different location so that a new platform can come up. The station will now have a total of eight platforms,” said a senior Northern Railways official. Booking offices, cloakroom and waiting rooms for both men and women are already in place at this end of the station.

New parking area
The entry point from the ISBT-end is especially congested during the morning and evening rush hours due to the lack of parking space. Keeping this in mind,a circulating and parking area is also being developed,a senior Railways official said.

The planned platform will lead out of the station into the circulating area that is being specially designed to organise movement of vehicles for pick and drop.

A parking area, spread over 5,000 sq m,was identified earlier by the Railways near the Transport Authority office, which is approximately 150 m away from the station — it was proposed to be connected to the station through a skywalk.

After discussions with Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, the Railways has received a proposal from DIMTS,which does not involve the same plot but illustrates an alternate plan of developing a parking space close to the ISBT and a 7m-wide foot overbridge (FOB) connecting the bus terminus with the station. Railways officials said the plan has been approved for implementation.

“Non-availability of Railways land on this side of station has been a major constraint— the steps of the FOB will be on land owned by the Delhi government. The matter was taken up with the Chief Secretary and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for a transfer of land,” a senior Railways official said.

“It was decided that a plot measuring 5,200 sq m,which is currently owned by the Slum and JJ wing of the MCD,will be transferred to the DIMTS to develop a multi-level parking and connect it with both the railway station and the ISBT with a skywalk that will be equipped with walkators,” he added.

Officials said essential services like washrooms, queuing areas with additional booking and PRS counters, bigger waiting halls have also been proposed under this skywalk.

The Railways has also requested Mehta for permission to widen roads outside the station, wherever possible,by narrowing footpaths, and checking unauthorised parking to ease congestion.
