Better street lights on cards along V-6 roads in the city

Sodium vapour lamps likely to be replaced with LEDs.

With complaints of 'faulty' street lights pouring in, the authorities on Friday mooted a proposal to replace sodium vapour lamps, used in the street lights, with LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) along the city's V-6 roads.

The new initiative was discussed at a meeting here between officials of the UT Administration and the Municipal Corporation on Friday. The proposal will now be debated by the civic body's general house before it is implemented.

The poor functioning of street lights on the V-6 roads has been among the most common complaints of city residents. As per the proposal, the Municipal Corporation has decided to tackle the problem by replacing sodium vapour lamps with LEDs in all the residential sectors. In the first phase, 16 sectors and two colonies are expected to be covered under the initiative. These include sectors 25-29, sectors 38-46, Manimajra, Dhanas and Maloya. In the second phase, LED street-lights will be installed in sectors 47-61 as well as in some villages.

"It was felt that in the sectors along Madhya Marg, the condition of street lights is better. However, in the second- and third-phase sectors as well as in villages and colonies, steps are required to improve lighting on the streets. The first phase of the new project will cost Rs 2.5 crore. The issue will be taken up in the House meeting. After approval, the work will be started," said Mayor Subhash Chawla. The LED lights are deemed more energy-efficient and last longer, even though the cost of installation is higher when compared to the sodium vapour lamps.

The street lights in the city are maintained by both the UT Administration and the Municipal Corporation but it is the civic body that pays even for those that come under the administration's jurisdiction. In a report on condition of the street lights presented at the meeting, officials of the administration claimed that 95 per cent of the street lights maintained by them were functional while the MC authorities stated that 98 per cent of their street lights were operational.
