Bhagwat says BJP to decide PM issue
Amid the clamour within the BJP to declare Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said Thursday that the decision should be left to the BJP.
"Let us not enter into other's jurisdiction. The issue is already being talked about... It is they who have to take a decision. If they commit a mistake, they will bear the brunt," Bhagwat told VHP's Dharam Sansad at the Kumbh mela.
However, they should not confine themselves to the concept of one party, one leader, he said. "Ek sangathan, ek party, ek neta, yeh is Hindu jagruti ka ek padaav ho sakta hai; lekin humein rukna nahin hai (One organisation, one party, one leader can be a step; but we can't stop in this journey to rejuvenate Hindu ideals)," he said.
Quoting the proverb, "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely", Bhagwat said: "We will have to get rid of a bad habit of ours. We will have to stop contracting our tasks to others." He also reminded the gathering that "humein Hitler nahin chahiye (we don't want a Hitler)".
On the Ram Temple, he said revival of Hindutva would force the government of the day to allow its construction or put in place a government that would facilitate it. "It has to happen either way," he said.
Earlier, some sants supported Modi. Swami Prapappanacharya, said that by winning seats for Hindu candidates in Muslim-dominated constituencies, Modi had shown what he was capable of.
Swami Vishwanand said the Ram temple could be constructed only when the BJP comes to power under the leadership of a determined man.
