Newly-elected Haryana Janhit Congress MP from Hisar parliamentary constituency, former chief minister Bhajan Lal today hinted at giving support to the new UPA government.

Talking to The Indian Express today, Bhajan Lal said, “We will think about giving support to the UPA government if the request comes. Dr Manmohan Singh has been a long time friend’’.

With regard to recent talks of him rejoining the Congress party he quit last year, the aging leader said there was no question of it. “Our party is doing quite well,’’ he said.

He also ruled out an alliance with any party in the forthcoming Vidhan Sabha elections in Haryana, saying, “Abhi aisi koi baat nahi hai”. Earlier, there was speculation that since HJC tried but did not succeed in aligning with BSP, the two parties may come together for the Vidhan Sabha poll scheduled to be held early next year. He denied that HJC was part of the third front, as announced by Kuldeep Bishnoi before the Lok Sabha polls.

Asked about his elder son former Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan, Bhajan Lal said he had not been keeping well and had gone abroad for treatment. “Chander Mohan will be back here in 4-5 days,’’ he said. Would Chander Mohan join the HJC? “I don’t know. Ask Chander Mohan,’’ he said.

Regarding the setting up of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha committee on Yamuna Water Accord headed by state Irrigation Minister Capt Ajay Yadav, Bhajan Lal said nothing will come of it. Earlier, Bhajan Lal had been blamed for Haryana’s reduced share in Yamuna water. “Yeh sab kahne ki baaten hain. The state Cabinet had been taken into confidence before signing the Yamuna Water accord in 1994 with other three states,’’ he said.
