Security around the Bhakra Dam, situated on the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border, has been pepped up following a reported threat by terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Toiba. Ropar SSP L K Yadav and other senior police officials visited Nangal on Sunday to review the security arrangements. A high-level meeting, chaired by the Punjab Chief Secretary, was also held today to review the arrangements.
The Punjab Police, Himachal Pradesh Police, BBMB and Army authorities are working in coordination for providing security at the hydro-electric project. One company each of PAP and Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) have been deployed in Nangal town and surrounding areas. A quick reaction team and bomb disposal squad has also been deployed to deal with any crisis. The police have set up checkposts at various entry points to the town and roads leading to Bhakra Dam, including Ajauli Maur, Bhabhor Sahib, MP Kothi, Barmala, Khawaja Pir Mandir. There are reports that the CISF may be deployed for security at the Bhakra Dam.
