BHU concern valid, but SC order on student body stands: HC

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) authorities, while defending the provisions allowing presence of vice-chancellor and other faculty members in supervisory roles of the elected students' council, had argued before the Allahabad High Court that their experience with the students' union has been bitter, as it has always derailed academic environment on the campus.

The court agreed with the apprehensions expressed by the university that an elected students' body without any supervisory presence of senior faculty members may again lead to the same situation. However, it said that the directions — which clearly said that nobody apart from students can be part of any elected students' body in the university — of the Supreme Court were to be treated as law.

On Thursday, a single judge bench of Justice A P Sahi had struck down the clauses of the ordinance passed by the BHU, which provided for the vice-chancellor to be the patron of the council, besides other senior faculty members as chairman and ex-officio vice-chairman of the students' council.
