Azad Maidan riot:A scrap dealer and a preacher, "concerned" over the killing of innocent people in Myanmar and Assam, sought permissions for a "peaceful protest" with 1,000 people at Azad Maidan on August 11. The crowd, however, swelled to lakhs as lack of intelligence on the anger in the community and reach of social media was exposed. Certain elements took peace out of the protest by burning vehicles, pelting stones and molesting women. Two youth were killed in the violence. In a knee-jerk reaction, police commissioner Arup Patnaik was transferred, but no systemic changes have been introduced yet to avoid a repeat. Till date, 57 mobsters have been charge-sheeted for the riot seen as complete failure of law and order.
Pallavi Purkayastha:The 25-year-old daughter of a Delhi bureaucrat was allegedly stabbed to death in her Chembur residence on August 9. After initially suspecting her live-in partner, Crime Branch arrested building watchman Sajjad Ahmed Mughal. They claimed Sajjad was stalking Pallavi and had even stolen a set of keys to her apartment. He allegedly tried to force himself on her. When she resisted, he allegedly slit her throat with a knife.
Spanish woman:Early on November 5, Mohammad Ansari alias Badshah sneaked into the Bandra apartment of a 27-year-old Spanish woman and allegedly raped her at knifepoint. He also nicked a camera and foreign currency before ending his 45-minute stay in the apartment. Within 24 hours, Badshah was picked up from his Reay Road home and the stolen items were recovered. The victim identified Ansari at Arthur Road Jail a day before returning home. A forensic test this month found traces of Ansari's semen on the victim's body and his saliva on cigarette butts he left behind.
