Big firms snatch up 30 UBS students in first two days

Recession seems to have little to no effect on the ongoing placement process that started in the city's oldest B-school — University Business School (UBS) — of the Panjab University on December 7 with 30 students grabbing job offers from top notch companies in the first two days.
Companies that have selected the pick of the crop include Ernst & Young, a Gurgaon-based consultancy; New Gen Technologies, an IT company; SBI life and ICICI bank.
Top rung companies from pharmaceutical, IT to banking sectors have approached the department and will be visiting for recruitments.
Last year, 125 students out of 133 were placed with top companies with the highest package of Rs 12 lakh being offered by a Power Finance Corporation. This year, all 140 students in the batch are eyeing big jobs. In 2010, the highest package was Rs 10.5 lakh with the average package at Rs 6.5 lakh.
The department has already put a cap and has allowed only those companies to conduct their recruitment drives who are willing to pay a annual package of above Rs 5 lakh.
The highest package fetched by 10 students so far is Rs 7.8 lakh, offered by Ernst & Young.
According to information, New Gen Technologies took three students with variable packages keeping Rs 7 lakh as the highest and 10 students got placed in ICICI bank and were offered Rs 6.54 lakh package. As many as seven students got placed with SBI life.
In the coming days big names like Cipla, Wipro Tech, Eclerx, Mahindra and Mahindra, Baja Alliance, Trident, HDFC and others will be visiting the department.
Talking to The Indian Express, student placement co-ordinator Anirban Saha said, "The placement process will continue for a week. It is just the beginning. We are sure that packages offered will definitely improve in the coming days. We are hoping for good placements this year."
