Bihar government plans to modify its existing surrender policy for naxalites and make it more attractive by incorporating a rehabilitation policy for those willing to surrender.
Director General of Police Anand Shankar had said after attending a meeting called by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with top police and civil officials recently that the surrender policy would be made more attractive.
“The policy is being drafted for the state government’s approval with suitable changes incorporating a rehabilitation package for the naxalites volunteering to surrender with arms”,Shankar said.
The rehabilitation package in the new policy,he said, would be made more attractive.
The existing policy, official sources said, was a failure in attracting the naxalites in their strongholds at Jehanabad,Gaya,Aurangabad and Jamui districts.
Altogether 74 naxalites surrendered in 2005,but the figure came down to only 21 in 2006,they said.
The years 2007 and 2008 registered surrender of 21 and 29 naxalites respectively and till March 2009 only two Maoists surrendered, the sources said.
