Bimal Gurung gets anticipatory bail

While Darjeeling police continued the raids to execute the pending arrest warrants issued by the court,Bimal Gurung,top ranking GJM leader,today surrendered in the Darjeeling CJM court and got the anticipatory bail. Gurung got the anticipatory bail in all the four criminal cases in which he is accused.

Sish Mani Gurung,Bimal’s counsel,said there were two non-bailable and two bailable warrants against Bimal.

Bimal today surrendered according to the order of the District Court and the CJM court granted him the anticipatory bail. Now,there would be no legal bar against Bimal Gurung and he can take part in the election process,said Sish Mani.

A source in the GJM said a large number of the party activists were wanted in several criminal cases. Now that the Darjeeling police has undertaken a drive to arrest the GJM activists wanted in connection with criminal cases,the activists are surrendering before the court to obtain anticipatory bail. This will allow them to take part in the election process like campaigning or organising meetings and rallies,said a party source.

D P Singh,SP of Darjeeling,said about 500 arrest warrants were pending in Darjeeling,Kurseong and Kalimpong and the police are conducting the raids there.

The police yesterday arrested 23 GJM activists.
