Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed today said it had been her decision to include human rights activist Binayak Sen in the steering committee for health for the 12th Plan. Hameed heads the committee.
Since Sen has considerable expertise in child malnutrition among tribals in Chhattisgarh,we hope to benefit from him. We need his input while formulating the 12th Plan, Hameed told The Indian Express.
She said that the Commission had constituted an excellent steering committee keeping in view gender balance, diversity, people who are very distinguished, talented in representing their fields. Sen,she said,is an exceptional doctor and seems to be most suitable. It was my decision to take him.
The Union home ministry today asked the Commission for confirmation of reports that Sen,who is facing sedition charges, has been made a member of the steering committee. Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia confirmed Sens inclusion. We have appointed Binayak Sen… to advise us on rural health for the 12th Plan. It was Planning Commissions proposal to appoint him, Ahluwalia said after a meeting with Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik here.
Sen was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Chhattisgarh court along with Naxal ideologue Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata businessman Piyush Guha for colluding to establish a Maoist network in the state. He got bail from the Supreme Court recently, and was released from a Raipur prison.
The 40-member steering committee on health is expected to submit its interim report by September 30,and a final report by October.
