Bird hits caused Rs 7 cr loss to airlines

As many as 260 bird hits in Mumbai during 2009 had caused a loss of Rs 7 crore to airline companies.

As many as 260 bird hits in Mumbai airport during 2009 had caused a loss of Rs seven crore to airline companies, the Bombay High Court was informed today.

This information was given in a public interest litigation filed by advocate Datta Mane, seeking removal of slaughter houses from near the Mumbai airport. According to the PIL,the BMC had permitted slaughter houses within 10 kilometre radius of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in violation of Development Control Regulations.

As a result, waste lies in the open that attracts birds including eagles and hawks near the airport, increasing the risk of bird hits, the PIL claims.

“The civic body had permitted about 98 licensed mutton shops,90 beef shops and 16 chicken shops and one pork shop in wards adjoining and within 10 km of the airport,” Mane’s counsel Kunal Cheema said.

When the counsel told the court that the dust bins of the slaughter houses lie open,Justice S J Vazifdar said,”Welcome to Mumbai.”

The court has directed the BMC to file its reply within four weeks.
