The ruling BJP and the opposition Congress claimed victory in the elections to 1,141 village panchayats, after the State Election Commission declared the results today.

While the BJP claimed that the 80 per cent of village panchayats voted for them, the Congress claimed that they won 60 per cent of panchayats.

Elections for 1,141 village panchayats were held on February 3.

"The people of Gujarat have overwhelmingly put faith in the positive politics of development led by Chief Minister Narendra Modi and elected more then 80 per cent of candidates who follow BJP ideology. So, 2,092 members and 286 sarpanchs were elected un opposed following the idea of 'Samras Gram

Panchayat' floated by the chief minister," claimed State BJP spokesperson I K Jadeja in a statement.

He also claimed that winning streak of the BJP will continue in the coming elections of taluka and district panchayats, scheduled to be held later this month.

The Congress on other hand claimed that 60 per cent of candidates who won the elections follow Congress ideology.

"Out of 1,141 sarpanchs who were elected today, 689 are Congress supporters. This has proved that in every district, people have moved towards Congress," said Chairman of the Congress Panchayat Cell Haribhai Chaudhary said in a statement.
