  • A BJP delegation met Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday to raise concerns over the transfer the control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and to the Chief Minister of Delhi.

A much-relieved delegation said they received satisfactory assurances from the Home Minister who said there has been no final decision on the matter yet.

The delegation was led by Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly V K Malhotra, Mayor of Delhi Kanwar Sain, former chairperson of the standing committee Vijender Gupta and leader of the House in the MCD Subhash Arya.

“The Home Minister has assured us that the proposal to transfer MCD to the Delhi government is in a nascent stage and no final decision has been taken on it so far. He told us that the Home Ministry had received recommendations on the matter from the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi. Chidambaram has asked the MCD and the BJP to furnish the ministry with recommendations and has further assured that he will take our recommendations into account,” the Mayor told to Newsline.

Sain added that in the meeting Chidambaram said all powers will not be taken away from the MCD. “He told us that if in case a transfer of power happens — powers like the appointment of the Municipal Commissioner and the dissolution of the House will not be transferred to the Chief Minister,” Sain added.

The BJP-led MCD will submit its recommendations to the Home Ministry next week.
