The BJP has not named Varun Gandhi as its campaigner in any of the three poll-bound states of Maharashtra,Haryana and Arunchal Pradesh. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi,on the other hand,is scheduled to address election rallies in Maharashtra and Haryana,as per a speakers’ lists submitted by the party to the Election Commission.

Incidentally, ailing former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee tops the lists while L K Advani occupies the second slot.

Asked about the omission of Varun — who caused the party considerable unease in the Lok Sabha polls with his Pilibhit speech — BJP vice-president and the party’s campaign chief for the three states,Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said: “These lists are to ensure that their helicopter expenses are recorded with the Election Commission. These lists are constituted in accordance with the views of the party’s state units. This doesn’t,however, mean that there are no other star campaigners in the party,or those not mentioned cannot go for campaigns.”

Significantly,Modi has been mentioned as the 17th speaker in the BJP’s Maharashtra list. Asked about the “demotion” of the party’s star chief minister,Naqvi said: “This is an internal matter.”

Vajpayee finds mention as “he remains the tallest leader” despite his ill-health,according to party sources. The other surprise addition is Manohar Parrikar to the Maharashtra list. Parrikar’s name has been doing the rounds as a possible replacement for BJP president Rajnath Singh.
