Even as the Election Commission is scheduled to hear a case regarding the BJP’s controversial anti-Muslim CD tomorrow, its hands are full with fresh controversies involving various parties coming up before it.
The latest to court controversy is Mayawati, who has allegedly circulated one lakh booklets in which “aspersion is cast on all castes” except her own. The Election Commission official in-charge of the UP, Balakrishnan, said, “The matter has been brought to the Commission’s notice. Though there’s no formal complaint against the BSP, the Commission has asked for a copy of the booklet and will take appropriate action.”
Then there is Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav’s case where he is alleged to have threatened security personnel that they would have to bear the consequences if he comes back to power for being tough on his party workers.
The poll panel has to also take a stand on a complaint filed by the NDA against Congress’s star campaigner Rahul Gandhi. The coalition’s grouse is that the authorities in UP denied landing permission to a helicopter carrying JD-U president Sharad Yadav while allowing Rahul’s chopper to land at the same spot. A delegation to file the complaint was led by JD-U’s Shambhu Shrivastwa and BJP’s Prakash Javadekar.
The EC today said “it will not stop short of taking strict action against Rajnath Singh if the allegation is proved correct.” But that is not all. The Commission has to take a decision on whether Election Commissioner Navin Chawla needs to recuse from tomorrow’s hearing in the face of BJP’s opposition.
