  • Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa earned a reprieve today when party dissidents Janardhana Reddy and B Sriramulu, after days of fighting in the open, appeared along with him in a show of unity at the residence of BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, and later at the residence of L K Advani. Yeddyurappa called the unity show a “birthday gift” for Advani who turned 83 today.

While the exit of Shobha Karandlaje from the state Cabinet is imminent, the CM, who had recently replaced the district officials of Bellary, would now replace them with another set of officials “who would be selected in consultation” with Janardhana and Karunakara Reddy, both ministers in his cabinet.

Janardhana told The Indian Express that he was “happy” with the compromise formula; in private, the dissident camp claimed that it’s only a “temporary truce”, and that “Yeddyurappa would be under watch over the next six months”.

A coordination committee, comprising state and central BJP leaders, would be in place to oversee the “reconciliation process”. Sriramulu also claimed that “there will now be two observers for Karnataka — Arun Jaitely and Sushma Swaraj”.

Sources said what prompted the Reddy brothers to back down from their demand for a change in leadership was a meeting with Jagadish Shettar on Saturday. “Shettar, a Lingayat like Yeddyurappa, told the Reddys that his reputation had been spoilt by the poor strategy adopted by the Reddys,” sources said. Sources close to Shettar said he would continue to function as the Speaker, “considering the fluid situation in the state”.

Reddy brothersBy: Bhaskar Kolnad | 09-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Edyurappa has earned good name in the state certainly for his past performance as deputy Cheif Minister under HD Kumaraswamy as well as Cheif Minister for the last one plus year.Asking for changing of cheif Minister is unwarranted.Reddy brothers got some 50 plus MLAs in this revolt should be probed by the party.Credibility of those MLAs who joined Reddy faction including Shettar who spoiled the party's image. In the interest of BJP ,Reddys should be asked to go to Andra Pradesh and build party base over there. The party can offer him party Cheif Ministership of Andrapradesh .Later stage if and when BJP comes to power at the centre he can made a Deputy Prime Minister representing the whole of south India.
Two tongued PoliticiansBy: Gurudatt Prabhu | 09-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Till Yesturday they were talking on "No compromise" tone(Reddy Bros.)and today every thing is fine with thier leader(CM). No copromise on leadership issue to "He is our leader statement. We were in Hyderabad resort to study Andrapradesh state flood rescue operations, statement by one of the most power greedy MLA who is facing molestation case. Our CM Crying in the open, informing his weekness for not able to retain people who have shown loyalty to him etc..etc.. Dear Politicians do you think People are foolish to take your words??Power Greedy,All for self interest, double tongued Politicians..
I agree with RajeshBy: Arun | 09-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I agree that the root cause is the weak leadership. I do agree that Advani is to blame for this weakness. Advani has simply been betrayed by his colleagues. Though I do not understand how BJP can still tolerate Rajnath Singh who is unimpressive leader who does not have any effective presence beyond UP. Even in UP there are many stalwarts in the party who are willing to pull him down. The best action for BJP would be for it's CM to submit his resignation along with his cabinet. But Kursi is too important even for a BJP leader. This is the weakness that has been exploited by arrogant Reddys. Mr Yeddiyurappa, show them their place, show them that you and your party is different and submit your resignation. You will rise in the eyes of public and not other way round. Today we all believe that you and your party colleagues want to stick to the chair COME WHAT MAY.
BJP's PROBLEMSBy: Rajesh Vyas | 09-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The BJP has tried to sweep the problem under the carpet. It is a matter of time that the crisis will raise its ugly head. The BJP is trying to cure the disease by treating the symptoms and not getting to the root cause of the problem. The root cause is a weak and confused leadership in general and that of Rajnath Singh and L K ADVANI in particular. Leaders who presided over the debacle in the Lok sabha elections and the State elections in Haryana and Maharashtra cannot commend respect. The first thing for revival is for Rajnath and Advani to call it a day. Altrnatively, pas into oblivion from National Politics.
