BJP councillor who killed NRI is dead, but parents still wait for justice

Seventy-year-old Parkash Kaur lost both her sons, residents of Toronto in Canada, in the month of September. Her elder son died of a heart attack in Toronto on September 17, 2007. Four years later, she came to Batala in Gurdaspur district to marry here younger son Gurinder Singh Gill (28). On September 9, 2011, they met the would-be bride's family and decided to fix the wedding date for December. Hours later, Gurinder was shot dead in broad daylight outside the Batala court complex, where he had gone to meet a friend.

On Wednesday, one of the two main accused — Batala BJP municipal councillor Rajdeep Singh Bhullar — died in the Gurdaspur jail after he complained of uneasiness. But Kaur's wait for justice is not over.

"The councillor had shot my son in the leg. His brother, Yadvinder Singh Bhullar, told him 'you don't know how to kill' and pierced my son's body with bullets. He is still absconding," said Kaur.

When the last rites of Rajdeep were performed on Wednesday, Kaur expected Yadvinder to show up. "Some people tell me he came in disguise. But the police denies this. In the US and Canada, nobody can kill and get away with it. Why can I not get justice in my own country?" she asked.

"My husband is paralysed and has not left India after our elder son died. I leave him with his sister when I visit my daughter-in-law and three granddaughters, who stay in Vancover. My daughter, who is married in the US, has filled the papers to get us both there," said Kaur.

In December last year, Kaur had come to the Punjab Assembly during the winter session to seek justice for her son. "After I returned from Chandigarh, a man came to my house in Batala and warned me that if I try to highlight the case, I will also meet my son's fate I am not afraid of being killed but living with painful memories," she said.
